Residents of Smiths Falls may be able to enjoy a fire pit in their back yards soon. Right now, open air fires aren’t permitted in the town. At this week’s committee of the whole meeting councillors heard from Fire Chief Normand Beauchamp that regulating open fires and fire pits will allow the fire department to reduce the number of emergency calls. If passed the bylaw would allow residents to apply for an open fire permit or a fire pit permit at a cost of $25. A renewal would cost $10. The town’s fire prevention officer would visit the proposed site to determine if it’s a safe area for an open fire or fire permit. The information would then be logged in the fire department’s system. If a fire call comes in at that location, the information would help in determining the fire department’s response.
