Former New York Yankees pitcher and controversial baseball author Jim Bouton has died at age 80. Throwing so hard that his cap flew off his head, Bouton was 21-8 with six shutouts in 1963, his second season in the majors. He went 18-13 with four more shutouts in 1964 before winning a pair of World Series games against the Cardinals that fall.

Smiths Falls’ Brooke Henderson won an award at the ESPYs, earning best female golfer honours. Henderson has won twice on the L-P-G-A Tour this season for a total of nine career victories, the most of any Canadian pro golfer.

She tweeted  “Extremely honoured to receive best female golfer at the ESPYs! So cool!”

Brooke will be teeing off this morning in round one of the Marathon Classic in Sylvania, Ohio after taking last week off.

Alex Morgan won female athlete of the year and shared the best team award with her U-S women’s national soccer teammates at The ESPYs. The award was presented hours after the squad was honoured with a ticker-tape parade in New York City to celebrate its Women’s World Cup championship. Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo won male athlete of the year at the show honouring the past year’s top athletes.

The Vancouver Canucks have acquired one of the top scorers still available on the free agent market by giving Michael Ferland a four-year deal worth about $14 million.  Ferland was an unrestricted free agent after putting up 40 points in 71 games for Carolina this past season. He previously played four years in Calgary.

Thiago De Freitas had two goals in the first half to help the Ottawa Fury to a 3-2 win over the H-F-X Wanderers in the third round of soccer’s Canadian Championship. Elsewhere, the Montreal Impact and York 9 F-C tied 2-2. And the Vancouver Whitecaps and Cavalry F-C played to a nil-nil draw in Calgary.

Forward Jordan Hamilton has been traded by Toronto F-C to the Columbus Crew for American forward Patrick Mullins. Toronto is giving up on a homegrown Canadian player who at 23 was in his sixth season with the first team. Hamilton appeared in 53 regular-season games for T-F-C with 11 goals and three assists.

Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal will square off at Wimbledon for the first time in 11 years when they battle for a spot in Sunday’s final. after wins in the quarterfinal matchups today. Federer knocked off eighth seed Kei Nishikori to become the first player to earn 100 victories at a single Grand Slam event.
