Canada is back on top at the world junior hockey championship. Akil Thomas scored with 3:58 left in the third period to cap a furious comeback and secure a 4-3 victory over Russia for gold. It’s Canada’s 18th title at the annual under-20 tournament, but first on European soil since 2008.

The Ottawa 67’s continue to extend their franchise record breaking winning streak. Yesterday, the team won their 16th straight game over the Erie Otters. The first goal, in a five-nothing win, also sent teddy bears raining down onto the ice.

The Teddy Bear Toss is an annual tradition in junior hockey across the country…the bears are collected and donated to children’s hospitals.

Ottawa has a chance for the 17th straight win on Friday when they host Guelph at 7 o’clock.

The Flames remain perfect this season in shootouts. Dillon Dube scored the winner in the seventh round to give Calgary a 5-4 comeback win over the Wild in Minnesota. Captain Mark Giordano scored on a power play with under six minutes to go to tie the game 4-4. Calgary is 4-and-oh in shootouts this season.

Not even a brutal schedule is slowing down the Tampa Bay Lightning. Steven Stamkos had a goal and an assist, and Tampa Bay beat the Carolina Hurricanes 3-1 for their seventh straight victory. The Lightning played a 5 p-m Eastern game at Carolina after arriving at 3-am. Tampa had to clear customs and fly from Ottawa after winning the previous night against the Senators.

Russell Wilson threw a 53-yard touchdown pass to D-K Metcalf, and the Seattle Seahawks beat the Philadelphia Eagles 17-9 to set up a showdown with the Green Bay Packers next week in the N-F-C Divisional Round. Meanwhile, the Minnesota Vikings stunned the New Orleans Saints 26-20 in overtime to win their N-F-C wild-card matchup. The Vikings will face the San Francisco 49ers next week.

After nine-and-a-half seasons with Dallas, Jason Garrett is out as coach of the Cowboys after missing the playoffs with an underachieving team in a make-or-break season. Garrett had the second-longest tenure with the franchise behind Tom Landry’s 29 years. Garrett took over when Wade Phillips was fired halfway through the 2010 season.

Former Raptors big man Jonas Valanciunas scored 30 points, Canada’s Dillon Brooks added 19, and the Memphis Grizzlies won their second game in two days by beating the Phoenix Suns 121-114. Valanciunas shot 12 of 16 from the field, and Brooks made five 3-pointers before fouling out in the final minute.
