Alex Ovechkin moved into 11th place on the N-H-L’s career list with a pair of goals, leading the Washington Capitals to a 2-0 win over the Carolina Hurricanes. The 34-year-old superstar passed Teemu Selanne and closed within four goals of Mario Lemieux (690) for 10th place.

Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard rallied to beat China’s Xiaodi You in three sets in her first qualifying match at the Australian Open. The 25-year-old from Westmount, Quebec faced 23 break points throughout the match, saving 17 of them. She will face Australia’s Maddison Inglis in her second-round qualifier.

A big night for Joe Burrow and a national football championship for L-S-U. Burrow threw five touchdown passes and ran for another score to lead the Number-1 Tigers to a 42-25 victory against Number-3 Clemson in New Orleans. L-S-U won its first national title since 2007 and fourth overall. Burrow’s five T-D passes and 463 yards passing are the most in a College Football Playoff title game.

Manager A-J Hinch and G-M Jeff Luhnow are paying the price for the Astros’ use of video to decode catchers’ signs during their 2017 championship-winning season. The two were first suspended by M-L-B, then fired by the Astros. A league investigation found that Houston used the video feed from a centre field camera to see and decode opposing signs.

LeBron James scored 23 of his 31 points in a dominant second half, and Dwight Howard added season highs of 21 points and 15 rebounds as the Lakers beat Cleveland 128-99 for their ninth consecutive victory. James added eight assists while passing Isiah Thomas for sole possession of eighth place on the N-B-A’s career list.
