The Winnipeg Jets _ backed by the razor-sharp goaltending of Connor Hellebuyck _ overcame a sloppy first period to beat the Vancouver Canucks 4-1 in exhibition play at Rogers Place in Edmonton. Goals from Nikolaj Ehlers and Dmitry Kulikov in an 85-second span in the second period gave the Jets some breathing room.



Top prospect Nate Pearson had a strong major league debut for Toronto. He just didn’t get any help at the plate. The righty went five innings, striking out five while allowing two hits, two walks and no earned runs in the Blue Jays’ 4-0 loss to the Nationals in Washington. Toronto mustered up just three hits and struck out 16 times.



The Dodgers and Astros showed no carry-over from a fracas in the series opener that led to suspensions, and Edwin Rios hit a two-run homer in the 13th inning to lift Los Angeles over Houston 4-2. The Dodgers played without manager Dave Roberts. He was suspended one game for his part in Tuesday night’s testy matchup that saw the dugouts clear.



Freddie Freeman homered and drove in three runs on a four-hit night, leading the Braves to a 7-4 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays in Atlanta’s homer opener. Freeman was stricken with the coronavirus before the shortened season and became so ill that he feared for his life. But he has quickly reclaimed his place as one of the game’s most feared hitters.



Former Blue Jays shortstop Jose Reyes has officially retired from baseball _ almost two years after playing his final game. The 37-year-old began his career in 2003 with the Mets. Toronto acquired him in a trade with Miami in 2013 before sending him to Colorado in 2015. He was optioned to the minors by the Rockies following a domestic violence incident involving his wife, and then released. He returned to the Mets in 2016 for three more seasons.



Number 1-ranked Ash Barty has pulled out of the U-S Open because she doesn’t want to risk travelling during the COVID-19 pandemic. The 24-year-old Australian is the highest-profile player so far to opt out of the Grand Slam tournament in New York because of the global health crisis. The tournament is scheduled to start August 31st.
