Jordan Eberle scored on a 2-on-1 break 12:30 into the second overtime and the New York Islanders avoided elimination with a 2-1 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Final. The Lightning still lead the series 3-2. Game 6 is on Thursday night.

Canada’s Jamal Murray played a big role in the Denver Nuggets creating some N-B-A history. Murray scored 40 points as the Nuggets beat the L-A Clippers 104-89 in Game 7 to advance to the Western Conference Final. No team has ever come back from a 3-1 deficit twice in the same post-season until Denver. Nikola Jokic had 16 points, 22 rebounds and 13 assists for the Nuggets.

Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo have helped the Miami Heat take Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals against Boston. Butler converted a three-point play with 12 seconds left in overtime to put the Heat ahead for good in a 117-114 triumph over the Celtics. Adebayo blocked Jayson Tatum’s dunk attempt in the final seconds to seal the win.

Luke Voit and Aaron Hicks homered to key a seven-run second-inning burst made possible when right fielder Derek Fisher misplayed a pair of flyballs, and the Yankees rocketed past the Blue Jays into second place in the A-L East with a 20-6 blowout that extended their winning streak to six. D-J LeMahieu had four hits and five RBIs, raising his average 13 points to .363

Ryan Yarbrough won for the first time in 16 appearances while helping the Tampa Bay Rays stay four games ahead of the second-place Yankees in the American League East. Yarbrough gave up one run and five hits over 5-and-2-thirds innings in the Rays’ 6-1 downing of the Washington Nationals.

The L-P-G-A Tour’s Portland Classic set for this weekend has been reduced to 54 holes because of poor air quality caused by wildfires that have been burning across the West. The air quality in Portland has been at dangerous levels because of the wildfires in Oregon, Washington and California. Canada’s Brooke Henderson has already withdrawn from the event.
